Earlier discussions with VIA Rail liaison personnel have indicated that no further movement was possible at this time without federal budget attention to the need for fleet renewal. Aging passenger cars and engines continue to be high priority for reliable VIA service. As well, improved service to SW Ontario continued to be contingent on negotiations with regard to track time, and recognition of the need for dedicated passenger lines and/or freight/passenger protocols to enable on time service.
The recent federal budget provided much needed funds for fleet renewal, along with a federal commitment to maintenance of remote community rail service. Gettingthere.ca, the CFUW Stratford transportation project, will continue to voice the need for provision of integrated public transportation for SW Ontario. Ideally this would be accomplished through cooperative efforts among all service providers and levels of government to serve the needs of this important area of our province
